Academy Award Winning Film Trivia

Horse movie trivia.  This should be easy right?  Who didn't see Seabiscuit in 2003?  Not so fast, there's a twist: Academy Award winning films made before 1950.   In honor of Hibiscus Stables Vintage 2008 kickoff, we take a look vintage movies that feature our favorite four-legged stars.

So grab your popcorn, dim the lights and give it your best.  We've included some hints to help the under 70 crowd - and you may want to phone a friend (preferably your grandmother) for some of
our most challenging questions yet.

 

1. This actor has starred in no less than 9 films about horse racing. For extra credit, name the film for which he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor. (Hint: He always played the jockey).

Answers to Movie Trivia: 

1.  Answer: C. Mickey Rooney was nominated for The Black Stallion in 1979. A nominee 4 times, He was awarded 2 Special  Oscars: one as a young man in 1938 and for Lifetime Achievement in 1982.

2.  Answer: A. Jeepers Creepers, where’d you get those peepers? The film also featured a young Ronald Reagan

3.  Answer: B. Walter Brennan appeared in 6 horse racing themed films and numerous westerns.

4.  Answer: D. Hi-Hat was the horse’s name. Groucho played Dr. Hugo Z. Hackenbush the horse vet.

5.  Answer: A. National Velvet won for Best Supporting Actress (Anne Revere) and Best Film Editing (Robert J. Kern).

6.  Answer:  C. Salty O’Rourke. It was directed by Raoul Walsh one of the founding members of the Academy.  Sadly, he was never nominated, although he directed such masterpieces as White Heat and High Sierra.

Answers to Filly Trivia: 

1) Answer: D. Ruthless-she won the inaugural running in 1867

2) Answer:  C.   Genuine Risk in 1980. The only filly in history to finish in the money in all 3 races she came in first in the Derby and second in both the Preakness and Belmont Stakes. At age 30, she is the oldest living Derby winner.

3) Answer: B. Ruffian was voted by many sportswriters "the greatest filly that ever raced". She was unbeaten in ten starts before her tragic breakdown during a match race against Foolish Pleasure in 1975. She's buried at Belmont near the finish line.

4) Answer: C. Until 2003, the series in choice B would be correct. The NTRA is considering changing to the series in answer A to more reflect the distances in the Triple Crown.

5) Answer: A Regret in 1915. She received an Eclipse Award for Horse of the Year Honors that same year.

Answers to Belmont Trivia: 

1) Answer: B   1905. The clubhouse and grandstand were rebuilt/re-opened in 1968. The first Belmont Stakes was contested in 1867 and run at Jerome Park.   

2) Answer: C   Big Sandy. So named because of the large component of sand in the surface. At one and half miles it is the largest dirt course for Thoroughbred racing in the world. It's also known as the Championship Track as almost every major Champion in the 20th century has competed there.

3) Answer: A   Secretariat who won the 1973 Belmont Stakes by 31 lengths setting a world and track record for 1 1/2 miles that still stands. Also, in the paddock is a large white pine that is over 180 years old.

4) Answer: D   Woody Stephens who won a record 5 Belmont Stakes in a row
from 1982-1986.

5) Answer: B   Thoroughbred racing's richest day with 11 stakes worth
over $20 million will now been contested over 2 days at Monmouth Park
